What Do Ants Eat? The Diet of an Ant and Types of Food Ants Eat. Ants might possible have the most diverse diet in all of the animal kingdom. Ants will literally eat almost anything. There are over 1. Ants are omnivours, and can eat just about anything a person can eat. This includes all of the four food groups and just about anything else in your kitchen that is left out! That means fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, sugars, oils, herbs, nuts, juice, etc. What do ants eat in the wild? As stated above, there are many different species of ants in the world. Some ants have very specialized diets, and so not all ants will eat the same things in wild. Some ants are predatory, some ants are foragers, some are farmers, and some are scavengers. It really depends upon the type of ant, but generally speaking most ants eat from one of these categories: Sugars & Fruits. Most ants will eat sugary foods when they can find it, for some, it is their sole source of food. In nature this usually comes in the form of nectar and other liquid secretions from plants and flowers. Honeydew secretions from aphids and other plant- eating creatures, like caterpillars; fruit, and other sweet plants. What Do Ants Eat? The Diet of an Ant and the Types of Food an Ant will eat. Ants will eat sugar, fruit, vegetables, meats, grains, nuts, and more. Meats & Protein. Some species of ants are predatory and will feed on other insects for food. This includes just about any insect they come across. Ants will also scavenge meat from larger prey, like rodents or fish, or other fallen animals when they can. Army ants have been known to actually kill large animals. Seeds & Grains. Harvester ants mainly forage for the seeds of various plants, but will also harvest grains, grasses, leaves, and other plant material. Vegetables. Most ants will eat vegetables or other food bearing plants, and can be a nuisance for gardeners. Cannibalistic Ants. In addition to being omnivorous, ants are also cannibalistic and have no problem eating other ants. Army ants in particular will prey on the brood (eggs, larvae, and very young ants) of other ants. Army ants will purposely invade the nests of other ant species to feast on thier brood. When this happens the ants from the invaded colony will run from the nest carrying their young in their mandibles. Other ant species have even designed special closable entrances that can be blocked when they hear an approaching Army ant swarm. When a queen ant starts a new colony and begins laying her eggs, there is no food around and no worker ants to get the food for the new born baby ants. So the queen does what any sensible mother would do.. That's not all. If times get too rough for the colony and the workers aren't bringing in enough food. The queen has no problem devouring some of her children to ensure her survival. The Fungis Diet. Leaf cutter ants take the ants diet to whole new level. Based on their name, you would think that they would eat leaves, and while there are many ant species that do eat leaves, leaf cutter ants do not actually eat the leaves but use the leaves to produce a fungus called Lepiotaceae in which the ants eat. The leaf cutter ants chew the leaves into a pulp that they then spit out and create a substrate for the fungus to grow on. Additionally the ants utilize a type of actinomycete bacteria that stops other harmful fungi and molds from grown within the nest. Herding Ants. Just like people, another extreme example of the ants diverse diet is their ability to herd their food. Certain types of ants like Lasius Niger, Lasius flavus and others have developed a symbiotic and mutualistic relationship with aphids. The ants feed off of the sugary secretions (called honeydew) from the aphids skin. In exchange the ants keep the aphids safe from preators and parasites. While it is a mutualistic relationship (both parties benefit), it is not necessarily voluntary for the aphids. The ants will bite the wings off of the aphids so that they cannot get away. In addition to biting off the wings of the aphids, recent research has found that chemicals on the ants feet will actually tranquilize and subdue entire colonies of aphids, keeping them close- by as a ready source of food (Science Daily, 2. The Find- a- spider Guide - Ant- mimicking spider. Find a spider by.. The very large porrect (forward pointing) chelicerae on the male are another striking feature. The female's palps are long and thin with paddle- shaped ends but are not porrect. At least on some Myrmarachne species the cephalothorax appears to have a helmet- like shape (as shown above). Note that the colour of Myrmarachne species seems to vary, at least partly, with the colour of the ants they are running with. Australian Green tree ants, or Oecophylla smaragina, are a type of Weaver ant found in South-east Asia and Northern Australia. Named for their striking green body. Weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina. Weaver ants or green ants. Habitat: Any surface where ants can be found. The spiders often hide under loose bark but also run with ants along established ant pathways. Green tea has long been regarded as necessary for a healthy diet. Follow a green tea diet of drinking at least four glasses of green tea each day to lose weight.
